Up until recently the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one example of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?

The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can result in variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of survival or producing offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population develop new physical traits or biological functions. This variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they don't pass on to future generations.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. They claim that the theory should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestral bird's parent.
Why is Evolution Important to Humanity?
Evolution explains the origins and evolution of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists to understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also helps us understand the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world and also to make important discoveries including the development of new medicines.
The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains more about the universe and the life on earth. It has been rigorously examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religious beliefs, as the theory is based on objects, events and processes in the physical world.
In reality many religious individuals have come up with ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the universe through evolution and that humans have an ancestral lineage with other animals.
It is important that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, is campaigning for the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.
It is important to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.
The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support are diverse. Some scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions that can lead to the development of new treatments or developing new medicines, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." The theory suggests that God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. In the end the evolutionary changes produce new species that are like the original ones.
Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they evolved slowly afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter.
In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they would remove references to evolution in their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR has won its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx in textbooks. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution, too.
STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences with an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
